You’ve just moved into your freshman dorm. Freshman orientation starts and college classes are a few short days away. Excitement mixed with fear, right? What major am I going to choose? Will I make new friends? How will I manage my money? Can I really decide what I want to do with my professional career in only a few years? How will I land a post-grad job?
These are all big questions you have to figure out as a newly admitted freshman. Most questions won’t have an answer for a long period of time, but there are resources available to college students that can help you answer questions like these. One resource is The National Society of Leadership and Success.
What is the NSLS?
The National Society of Leadership and Success is one of the nation’s largest leadership and honor societies. Most college campuses have a chapter for students- if your campus doesn’t have a chapter you can still join via the online chapter. The society focuses on building leadership skills as well as strengthening resumes and networking. Students are able to apply by submitting an application along with 1-3 references from professors or staff.
By completing their program members can receive a leadership certificate while also listing their affiliation on all statements of personal accomplishments and resumes.
What are NSLS Membership Benefits?
There are many benefits to joining the National Society of Leadership and Success! Members have special access to scholarships and awards– more than a quarter-million dollars. Networking events and unique employer recruitment opportunities are open to all members. Special discounts on computers, textbooks, and grad school prep courses are just some of the benefits that come from being a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.
Besides all this, why should you join the NSLS? Here are three (and a half) reasons:
NSLS Will Strengthen Your College Resume
Besides taking classes and getting good grades, a college student needs to be thinking about their resume. Most businesses and experts don’t just want an A-student, they want someone who is capable and has experience.
A survey quoted by Forbes says, “more than half of students surveyed said increased access to internships and other professional experiences would have helped them feel better prepared [for their career]. ” If you can show your future boss that you’ve tried new things and learned from the past you’ll feel more ready and prepared for your first post-grad job.
The National Society of Leadership and Success can help you gain more experience to add to your college resume. Resume building experiences such as internships, skill building, and work opportunities are available for members only, which means less competition for the same jobs. The more experiences you have to add to your resume, the stronger candidate you are for the job of your dreams.
NSLS Will Teach You Leadership Skills
Leadership is one of the top skills this society wants you to learn as a college student- it’s so important that it’s in their name! A stat from their website says 100% of student presidents and administrators say that the NSLS is achieving its mission of building leaders who make a better world.
Each year the society holds multiple Leadership Summits across the nation. These events include keynote speakers, panels, deep learning, and mentor power hours. You’ll be able to meet like-minded people, enhance personal and professional development, and even present your ideas and work to others. Opportunities to collaborate or get feedback from professionals are always great ways to improve. Take your leadership skills to the next level by applying and participating in the leadership conference closest to you.
How else can you build leadership skills? Each chapter has a president as well as chapter members who aid in planning chapter activities and events. Don’t know if your college campus has a chapter? Check for the closest NSLS chapter to you here.
NSLS Will Expand Your Network
Networking. The professional word for adulting, right? As a college student you’ve probably heard this word before, maybe even a million times by now. Everyone says networking is important, but where do you start as a freshman on a college campus? By becoming a NSLS member you can start networking better at an earlier age than your peers and expand your options for the future.
As mentioned already, NSLS holds leadership summits every year in multiple locations. These opportunities to meet professionals in your field are priceless! Any chance you have to talk with people who have been where you are can offer incredible advice and possible opportunities to work with them in the future after graduation.
Don’t be afraid to reach out! It’s always a bit intimidating to talk with professionals, especially when you’re new to the field. Ask questions that will help you learn more about the professional’s field and work life. Follow up with people you meet at work luncheons, conferences, and other meetings.
Where’s The Half?
Joining societies and groups can lead to long lasting friendships! Not only can you boost your professional persona, you can meet other college students and gain friends that will last longer than just a class project.
The National Society of Leadership and Success has so many opportunities for individual and professional growth. Between building leadership skills, networking, and strengthening your college resume, the NSLS can play a big part in your campus experience and lead you to the job experience you’re looking for in the future.
